AH, tofu. That mysterious eat substitute you find in many vegan and vegetarian recipes. But is there actually a way to take it from a bland block to a family favorite? The answer is yes!
Over at the BuzzFeed affiliate Tasty’s website, they release an awesome video detailing just how to make that tofu meal as appetizing as that chicken stir fry you love so much. The first hack suggested is to remove as much moisture from the block of tofu as you can. However, this trick should only be used with firm or extra firm tofu.
There are several different ways to try and remove excess water from your tofu; the first being the pressing method. For this, you’ll want to slice your tofu into thinner blocks and place them on a paper towel. Cover them with a second paper towel and you something to weight down our tofu. This should only take about 15 minutes.
Now that you have that moister gone, it’s time to marinate! Your tofu will absorb much more flavor. The main trick to marinating tofu is to try and stay away from oil. Based marinades to that the seasonings can be absorbed verse the oil. Sweet teriyaki tofu anyone?
Lastly, you have to make sure you have the correct tofu for what you’re making! Firm and extra firm tofu and great for cooking and frying, but soft6 tofu work well in soups and smoothies!
